The original shopping center dated from the 1950's. Its exterior walls were finished with dark brown textured plywood, as was the overhanging canopy. To modernize the facade it was decided to refinish the walls with a light colored stucco. This also provided an opportunity of adding some much needed insulation to the exterior walls. A sloping roof was built on top of the existing canopy thereby increasing the building's apparent height; this was done using steel stud framing and metal roofing to keep the superimposed weight increase to the minimum. As the shopping center is U-shaped a new tower was added and angled at 45 degrees at each interior corner, and a larger tower was added at the center of the building to again add height and to provide a focal point. This also provided the opportunity of additional signage. |
